The Corvette Leadfoot Challenge 2013 was run at Winton Raceway on Sunday 3rd November 2013 in conjunction with the Marque Sports Car Association Victoria’s (MSCAV) last round of the their 2013 Regularity and Super Sprint Championships.
The MSCAV has a number of regular competitors in Corvettes but it was certainly a real treat to see and hear so many large V8s thundering around the track. Corvettes were spread over several different run groups based on past driver experience and performance, although there were some comments that maybe they should have all been in a separate Corvette only run group. Apart from the more refined Regularity events, the different run groups did ensure that there was little chance of a big Corvette monstering something like a bugeye Sprite on the track.
The Corvette Leadfoot Challenge is in part a social get together comprising members of Corvette car clubs in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, although members from Queensland have attended in the past. Apart from a social catch up, for many participants the highlight is the very competitive track day. The venue for the track day generally alternates between Wakefield Park in NSW and Winton in Victoria. For 2013 the venue was Winton and the timing of the Leadfoot Challenge also coincided with Melbourne’s Spring Racing Festival with Derby Day, the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day all within a few days of the competition.
All up, 18 Corvettes entered into the MSCAV competition, with 6 in the Regularity event. A further 12 Corvettes (13 drivers as one car was shared) competed in the MSCAV’s Super Sprint event in the 5,000 cc and over category. Corvettes dominated that category, although there were also a couple of FPV Falcons and a couple of Porsches for them to contend with. Some of the Corvettes’ lap times were close to fastest of the day in the range of 1:35 to 1:36.
Preliminary lap times are available from the Natsoft website and are included in the MSCAV Super Sprint heading.
Apart from competition cars, there were also quite a number of Corvettes in the Carpark and pits area having a good look at what was going on.
