Classic Car Photography went to Sandown International Raceway last weekend to help celebrate the 21st annual Historic Sandown motorsport event. This year is also the 50th anniversary of Sandown Raceway, so the event was even more special.
Promoted as the “21st big bad Historic Sandown” and managed by the Victorian Historic Racing Register (VHRR) this was, as always, a splendid event. Of course beautiful weather helped enormously, but the main reason for this is the sheer diversity of what’s going on over the entire weekend.
When you first enter the venue, chances are that you will be met by displays of cars. Some are car club displays; this year including displays of Minis, Holdens, Valiants, Ford Coupes, Mustangs, MGs, Renaults, and more. Even in the car park there were organised displays of classic Chevrolets, plus other individual cars, some of which were advertised as being for sale.
Then there is the considerable range of traders’ stands, where you can buy accessories, books and magazines, photos, plus of course the inevitable food stalls.
It would be quite possible to spend the best part of a day without going anywhere near the actual motor racing.
Getting hold of the event program is essential if you want to see all the racing that interest you – it is a great publication although there will always be some changes to the actual competitors after the program is printed, which can be a bit confusing at times. Having the program means that you can see the particular events that interest you and then schedule pit stops, shopping, eating, etc when those events of lesser interest are on. Our photos of Historic Sandown probably tend to reflect those events that we prefer, but it really is difficult to photograph every car in every event so some bias does slip in.
Sunday was Remembrance Day, and at 11.00 am all action stopped and there was a quiet service in remembrance of those who had fallen in war, complete with bagpipes and bugle.
Later on the Sunday afternoon there was an aerial display and also a Comparison Speed event.
For the classic car enthusiast, and especially the historic motorsport enthusiast, Historic Sandown is an event not to be missed.
