The Morris Car Club of Victoria (MCCV) hosted the Centenary Day of the Morris Car Show ‘n Shine at Caribbean Gardens in Scoresby, Melbourne on Sunday 6th October 2013. The day was sponsored by ‘Motoractive’, The Federation of Motoring Clubs, AOMC and the RACV.
2013 is the 100th anniversary of the first ‘Morris’ motor car leaving the factory and there have been many events worldwide to celebrate the Morris centenary. Perhaps the highlight in Australia was in Canberra in April this year when over 170 ‘Morris’ cars were on display to celebrate the milestone. The event was proudly supported by and held in conjunction with the ‘Centenary of Canberra’ celebrations.
Morris cars started coming to Australia immediately after World War One and were popular until 1974 when BMC Australia closed its Sydney manufacturing plant. Morris sales peaked in 1964 when 36,093 were sold here. Many are still running and others are being restored by enthusiasts.
Caribbean Gardens in Scoresby is a popular venue for car club events, and for this year’s Morris Centenary Day the display area was nearly totally full with Morris, Austin, BMC and Leyland vehicles of all shapes and descriptions.
Morris Minors, whether sedans, utes, vans or “woodies” probably dominated number wise, with a strong contingent from Geelong swelling local numbers.
Minis were also out in force, including some very nice 850s, Coopers, Clubmen and a solitary Moke.
There were several MGs including a glorious 1929 model and a 1951 TD.
Wolseleys were also out in force, including several interstate registered cars and a Police car complete with siren and uniformed officer. Older Morris Oxfords, Cowleys and commercial vehicles attended as well as several Austins including a 1930 Austin 7 “Fabric” Saloon.
A unique entrant was the “Photon” Lotus Eleven replica powered by a supercharged Morris Minor 998 cc engine.
All in all the Morris Centenary Day was a fabulous day out for Morris and associated marque supporters of all ages.
