The Group A and Group C Touring Cars were popular features of the annual Phillip Island Classic motorsport event, this year held over the Labour Day long weekend in March 2014.
The Group C & Group A cars saw the rise and consolidation of Australian motorsport legends such as Brock, Moffat, Johnston, Richards, Grice, Bond and countless others, driving their unmistakably raw and exhilarating Toranas, Commodores, Falcons, Mazdas, BMWs, Jaguars, Nissans and more.
Group C touring car regulations were current from 1973 to 1984, and Group A regulations ran from 1985 to 1992, which in turn made way for the V8 Supercar formula that we know today.
The cars racing in Groups A & C are not replicas; they are the actual cars raced from 1973 to 1992 and many of the cars still carry the names of sponsors and drivers now long gone from motor racing. These cars find a place to race and recreate the era when flares were the “in” thing and not only for your jeans.
The Group A & C Touring Car events at the Phillip Island Classic included a many locally produced cars including:
- Holden Commodores, Geminis, L34 Toranas, etc
- Ford Escorts, Falcons, etc
However the expanded eligibility regulations resulted in many drivers competing in more exotic cars including:
- Nissan Skyline Turbo GTRs
- BMW M3s
- Ford Sierra RS500s
- Ford Mustangs
One particular highlight of the Phillip Island Classic 2014 was seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards competing in his 1990 Australian Touring Car Championship winning Nissan HR31 Turbo.
