Sunday 12th October saw the Sprites at Sandown for 2014, held in conjunction with MSCA 2014 Round 8.
This year’s event, organised by the MSCA in conjunction with the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers Club, followed on the success of a similar event in 2013, Fortunately weather conditions for 2014 were far better than 2013 with no sign of torrential rain. Perhaps surprisingly, numbers were down from 2013; as were overall numbers for the MSCA Sprint and Regularity events. In part this is no doubt due to some potential competitors resting their cars for the forth-coming 6 hour relay event at Winton. Others possibly stayed at home to watch the motor racing at Bathurst, although the MSCA did provide large screen TVs, food and refreshments for the comfort of spectators. Poor old Peter was hobbling around on crutches but his two pale blue bug-eyes were competing with alternate drivers, and both won their classes (based on preliminary Natsoft results).
The Sprites at Sandown Parade Laps during the lunch break attracted only a few participants but did get in quite a few laps. Usually Classic Car Photography would include some action photos of the Parade Lap but this year Nathan offered me the passenger seat in his yellow Midget and I wasn’t going to refuse his offer.
All indications are that the MSCA and AHSDC will organise another Sprites at Sandown event in 2015, and perhaps the timing will be a bit more fortuitous.
