Holmesglen TAFE in Glen Waverley was the venue for the Victorian Mini Club (VMCI) Mini Show 2013.
Fine weather greeted a good number of Minis on display, and also in the car park, plus of course visitors. Facilities were good with plenty of parking for visitors, plus access to toilets, coffee, food and ice-cream. Craig had the BMC Experience stand with a focus on the magazine and the 2013 Shitbox Rally video.
The display area was a little interesting, being in something of a “U” shape, but VMCI organisers took advantage of the situation and were able to carefully arrange cars in their judging categories around the “U”.
As was to be expected, there was a real variety of Minis on display. Classic Minis won out numbers wise, with several later UK Minis and a small number of BMC MINIs as well. There were a few Mokes but perhaps a disappointing number of specials or derivatives.
There were outstanding cars in all categories, with plenty to see and plenty of detail to take in for the Mini enthusiast. The unmodified/standard category had some stunning cars, many of which were undoubtedly nut and bolt perfect.
In terms of absolute standout value, the modified category wins every time with the freedom to add sometimes almost outrageous body panels and bright paint, but this is almost certainly accompanied by meticulous work on engine bays, interior, and so on.
For many, Minis are simply fun cars to own and drive, and their owners don’t take them too seriously. There were some cars featuring not much more than an interesting paint job, and a couple of Mini convertibles that didn’t come out of the factory that way.
Other Minis, particularly some of the racing Minis, are very serious indeed and featured engine transplants, fibreglass body panels, stripped interiors and whatever else it takes to go fast.
And of course we shouldn’t forget the Mini Show 2013 special guest, Fletch from the Classic Restos TV show on Channel 31. Fletch was filming for his TV show which will apparently run in 5 or 6 weeks time.
